Is your pet protected?

Did you know that unless regularly vaccinated, your dog or cat is at risk from several highly infectious and potentially fatal infectious diseases?

In cats we recommend regular vaccinations again Cat Flu, Panleucopenia, and Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV).

We strongly recommend vaccinations to include FeLV as it is a common and important cause of illness and death in pet cats. Between 80 and 90% of infected cats die within three and a half years of being diagnosed as having FeLV.

In dogs we routinely vaccinate against Canine Parvovirus, Canine Distemper, Infectious Canine Hepatitis and Leptospirosis. Additional cover for Bordetella bronchiseptica (kennel cough) is also recommended.

None of these diseases have yet been eradicated although thankfully, as a result of vaccination, their incidence has been greatly reduced.

Additionally, vaccination is the only reliable method of protecting against the majority of these diseases, there is no specific cure for them and treatment may not only be unsuccessful but also very costly.

Cats and dogs can also be vaccinated against Rabies for travel purposes.

The first or initial vaccinations are given between 8 and 10 weeks and repeated at 12 weeks of age as the maternal antibodies are reducing. This will provide your pet immunity for the first year of life.

The annual vaccination and health examination - Immunity to infectious diseases is not indefinite, and will gradually fall over time leaving your pet at risk. Regular annual vaccinations are needed to stimulate your pet's immunity, thereby minimising the risk when challenged by a natural infection.

At the same time, we like to carry out a thorough health examination, and also look at other aspects of pet healthcare such as worming, flea control and diets. This is also an ideal time to ask any questions you may have regarding your pet's health and welfare.
