Travelling Abroad
Since March 2000, your pet dog or cat can travel to most European countries and some long haul designations, and return to the UK without having to spend six months in quarantine. All our veterinary surgeons are Local Veterinary Inspectors or LVI’s which allow them to complete PET passports.
Each pet must fulfil the requirements of the PET Travel Scheme. The spec ific government information about the PET Travel Scheme can be found by clicking on the picture.
In order to qualify for the scheme, your pet must follow the steps listed.
Microchipped. A permanently identified to allow all the necessary information to link with your pet.
Rabies vaccination. This can be carried given on the same day as the microchipping and will provide the correct immunity to rabies whilst travelling abroad.
Blood sampled. This is normal performed 3-4 weeks after the rabies vaccination, each pet must achieve a certain level of immunity after the rabies vaccination before a passport can be issued.
PETS Passport issue. Once we have received the blood results we can complete an individual PETS passport, each pet must be health checked at the time of issue.
SIX MONTHS. The passport allows you to travel immediately but you may not re-enter the UK for SIX months after the date the blood sample for rabies immunity was taken. Once this period has past you may travel and re-enter the UK as long as the rabies vaccinations are kept up to date.
With all this in mind, you need to allow at least 7 months from the date of your pet's initial rabies vaccination before he or she can re-enter the UK under the scheme – please plan ahead!
On returning to the UK you MUST have a health check by a veterinary surgeon who will administer worming and tick treatment. This must be performed 24 to 48 hours before arriving at the port or airport, please ensure the passport is completed at the examination including the time, date, stamp and signature of the vet.
For travel to other countries outside the EU, it is important to contact us as soon as you are considering travelling so the appropriate advice and documents arranged. Please contact your branch surgery for further information.
